Overview

One contractor from survey to handover

We build district, rural and urban roads for government departments and public sector undertakings, and we compete for this work through public tenders.

A road contract brings several kinds of work together: earthwork for the embankment, granular layers, a bituminous or concrete surface, culverts and drains where water crosses the road, and road furniture once the surface is down. We take a road through all of these stages, so the department deals with one contractor from survey to handover.

What the work covers

Four kinds of road work

Most road contracts are one of these, or a mix of them along the length of the road.

  • New construction

A new road on a fresh alignment: clearing, earthwork and subgrade, the granular layers, the surface, and the drains and culverts that keep it dry.

  • Widening

Extra width or extra lanes on an existing road. The new strip is built up from the subgrade and joined to the old pavement, so the road carries traffic as one.

  • Strengthening

A new layer over a road that is wearing out. The old surface is repaired and levelled first, then the overlay is laid to the thickness in the design.

  • Road furniture and markings

Kerbs, signs, road studs, crash barriers and road markings: the finishing work that makes a new road safe to use, by day and by night.

How a road is built

Layer by layer, from the ground up

A flexible pavement is a stack of layers, each spreading the load of the traffic to the one below. Every layer is laid and compacted to the design thickness and levels before the next one goes down.

  1. Wearing courseBituminous concrete

The surface traffic runs on: smooth, dense and sealed against water.

  2. Binder courseDense bituminous macadam

Bonds the surface to the base and spreads the load.

  3. BaseWet mix macadam

Crushed aggregate mixed with water and compacted: the main load-bearing layer.

  4. Sub-baseGranular sub-base

Graded granular material that supports the base and drains water away.

  5. SubgradeSelected earth

The top of the embankment, compacted and tested for density.

  6. EmbankmentEarthwork

Earth built up in compacted layers to the design level.

Quality

Tested at every layer

Road contracts in India are usually built to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) Specifications for Road and Bridge Works and the codes of the Indian Roads Congress (IRC). We build to the drawings and the specification in each contract.

Every material and every layer is tested against the specification before the next one goes down, and the records are kept for the client's engineer.

  • Field density and moisture tests
  • Aggregate gradation and bitumen content
  • Concrete cube testing
  • Level and thickness checks

Questions

Road construction: common questions

What kinds of road work do you take on?

New roads, widening and strengthening of district, rural and urban roads, with the drains, culverts, road furniture and markings that go with them. We also build highways, bridges, and bituminous and concrete pavements.

Which specifications do you build to?

To the drawings and the specification in each contract. For most road work in India this means the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways Specifications for Road and Bridge Works and the codes of the Indian Roads Congress.

Can a road stay open while you work on it?

Yes, where the contract needs it. Every work zone next to live traffic is signed, barricaded and managed by flag persons, and everyone on site works in full personal protective equipment.

How can we send you a tender or ask for your company profile?

Send a tender through the tender enquiry form on our website, and ask for our company profile through the contact form. You can also call us on +91 99251 98001 or write to info@vishalinfraglobal.com.
