Our work

Highway construction

  • Two-laning and four-laning
  • Paved shoulders
  • Junction improvement

Overview

Wider, stronger highways, built under traffic

We work on state and national highways for government departments and public sector undertakings: widening to two and four lanes, paved shoulders, strengthening and new sections. We compete for this work through public tenders.

Highway work is usually done with the road open. The carriageway is built in sections, one side at a time, to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) specifications and the codes of the Indian Roads Congress (IRC), and every work zone next to live traffic is signed, barricaded and managed by flag persons.

What the work covers

Four kinds of highway work

A highway contract often brings several of these together along its length.

  • Widening

Two-laning and four-laning of existing highways. The new width is built up from the subgrade and joined to the old carriageway, so the highway carries traffic as one.

  • Paved shoulders

Paved strips alongside the carriageway that support the edge of the pavement and give slower vehicles room to move aside.

  • Strengthening

An overlay designed for the traffic the highway now carries, laid after the old surface is repaired and levelled.

  • Junction improvement

Wider turning areas, traffic islands, signs and markings that make a junction clearer and safer to use.

How a highway is built

Built for heavy traffic, layer by layer

A highway pavement has the same layers as any flexible pavement, made thick enough for the traffic it is designed to carry. Each layer is laid and compacted to the design thickness and levels before the next one goes down.

  1. Wearing courseBituminous concrete

The surface traffic runs on: dense, smooth and sealed against water.

  2. Binder courseDense bituminous macadam

Spreads the heavy axle loads that highway traffic brings.

  3. BaseWet mix macadam

Crushed aggregate mixed with water and compacted: the main load-bearing layer.

  4. Sub-baseGranular sub-base

Supports the base and drains water away from the pavement.

  5. SubgradeSelected earth

The top of the embankment, compacted and tested for density.

  6. EmbankmentEarthwork

Built up in compacted layers, and widened where the highway is widened.

Quality

Tested at every layer

We build to the drawings and the specification in each contract.

Every material and every layer is tested against the specification before the next one goes down, and the records are kept for the client's engineer.

  • Field density and moisture tests
  • Aggregate gradation and bitumen content
  • Level and thickness checks

Questions

Highway construction: common questions

Do you work on national highways as well as state highways?

Yes. We take on widening, strengthening and new sections on both, built to the drawings and the specification in each contract.

Can the highway stay open during the work?

Yes, where the contract needs it. We build in sections, and every work zone next to live traffic is signed, barricaded and managed by flag persons.

Which specifications do you build to?

To the drawings and the specification in each contract: for most highway work, the MoRTH Specifications for Road and Bridge Works and the IRC codes.

How can we send you a tender or ask for your company profile?
