Concrete works

  • Cement concrete roads
  • Pavement quality concrete
  • Reinforced concrete

Overview

Rigid pavements and the structures beside them

We build cement concrete roads, including pavement quality concrete (PQC) on dry lean concrete (DLC), and the reinforced concrete structures that go with a road: drains, box culverts and retaining walls.

A concrete pavement is a rigid slab. It is laid in panels, with joints cut at set spacings and dowel and tie bars across them, so that it can expand and contract with the heat without cracking.

What the work covers

Four kinds of concrete work

Concrete pavements, and the reinforced concrete that keeps a road drained and its slopes held.

  • Cement concrete roads

Concrete roads for urban streets and rural roads, laid in panels with joints, for a long life with little maintenance.

  • Pavement quality concrete

PQC slabs on a DLC base for heavily trafficked roads, with dowel bars and tie bars across the joints.

  • Drains and box culverts

Reinforced concrete drains and box culverts that carry water along the road and under it.

  • Retaining walls

Reinforced concrete walls that hold back the earth where a road runs along a slope or a high embankment.

How a concrete road is built

A slab on a firm, even base

A concrete pavement spreads the load through the slab itself, so the layers below it need to be firm, even and well drained.

  1. Concrete slabPavement quality concrete

The slab traffic runs on, laid in panels with joints, dowel bars and tie bars.

  2. Separation membranePolythene sheet

Lets the slab move over the base without bonding to it.

  3. BaseDry lean concrete

A lean, rolled concrete that gives the slab a firm, even bed.

  4. Sub-baseGranular sub-base

Drains water away from under the pavement.

  5. SubgradeSelected earth

The top of the embankment, compacted and tested for density.

  6. EmbankmentEarthwork

Earth built up in compacted layers to the design level.

Quality

Tested from the base to the slab

Concrete pavements and structures in India are usually built to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) Specifications for Road and Bridge Works and the codes of the Indian Roads Congress (IRC). We build to the drawings and the specification in each contract.

Every material and every layer is tested against the specification before the next one goes down, and the records are kept for the client's engineer.

  • Concrete cube testing
  • Field density and moisture tests
  • Level and thickness checks

Questions

Concrete works: common questions

When is a concrete road chosen over a bituminous one?

Usually where traffic is heavy, where water tends to stand, or where the road must last a long time with little maintenance. The choice is made in the design for each contract.

What is the difference between PQC and DLC?

Pavement quality concrete is the strong slab that traffic runs on. Dry lean concrete is a weaker, rolled concrete laid under it to give the slab a firm, even bed.

Do you build concrete structures as well as pavements?

Yes: reinforced concrete drains, box culverts and retaining walls, usually as part of a road contract.
