Overview

The ground every road stands on

Every road starts with the ground beneath it. We clear the site, cut and fill to the levels in the drawings, and build the embankments and subgrade for roads, highways and bridge approaches.

An embankment is built in layers. Each layer is spread, brought to the right moisture, compacted by roller and tested for density before the next one goes down, so that the finished road does not settle.

What the work covers

Four kinds of earthwork

Everything below the pavement, from clearing the site to the finished subgrade.

  • Site clearance

Clearing and grubbing: removing vegetation, roots and topsoil so that the work rests on firm ground.

  • Excavation

Cutting through high ground to the road levels, and digging trenches for drains and culverts.

  • Embankment

Earth built up in compacted layers to raise the road above flood and drainage levels.

  • Subgrade

The top of the embankment, made of selected earth and compacted harder, to carry the pavement.

How an embankment is built

Compacted layer by layer

An embankment is more than a pile of earth. Each layer is placed, watered and rolled to a set density, and the top is finished to carry the pavement.

  1. SubgradeSelected earth

The top of the embankment, compacted harder for the pavement above.

  2. Upper embankmentCompacted earth

Placed in thin layers, each rolled and tested before the next.

  3. Lower embankmentCompacted earth

Builds up the height of the road, layer by layer.

  4. Prepared groundStripped and compacted

The natural ground after the topsoil is removed and the surface compacted.

  5. Natural groundExisting soil

The ground the embankment stands on.

Quality

Tested at every layer

Earthwork is usually specified by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) Specifications for Road and Bridge Works. We build to the drawings and the specification in each contract.

Every layer is tested against the specification before the next one goes down, and the results are kept for the client's engineer.

  • Field density and moisture tests
  • Level and thickness checks

Questions

Earthwork: common questions

Why is an embankment built in layers?

Thin layers can be compacted all the way through. A thick layer compacted only at the top would settle later and crack the road above it.

What is the subgrade?

The top part of the embankment, built from selected earth and compacted harder than the layers below, on which the pavement layers are laid.

How is compaction checked?

Each layer is tested for field density and moisture against the specification before the next layer is placed, and the results are recorded.
